ETX farm wants to give away watermelons

Posted: Updated:

RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) -- A watermelon farm wants to get rid of some watermelons, saying it has hundreds available for a charity willing to distribute them to people in need.

Family members who live there tell us they've already picked and sold all the ones grocery stores are willing to take. But hundreds more are perfectly good, so the family is looking to give them to East Texans in need.

"[This watermelon is] good. It's ripe now and it's just going to rot," Joe said." It just didn't get big enough to be sellable. But, you know, something like this could feed two or three people a nice meal of watermelon."

Right now the family has a whole trailer full of watermelons ready to go. They're hoping to hear from an East Texas non-profit that could get the watermelons out to hungry families.
