Blog: UT Tyler using construction to address parking issues

Posted: Updated:

TYLER/SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - University of Texas at Tyler administration has begun some construction at several of its parking lots to deal with recent parking issues, according to a UT Tyler student blog.

The blog stated that university President Dr. Rodney H. Mabry sent emails to students to inform them of the construction project. UT Tyler's public communication department shared the message on its Facebook page today.

"Students are having to be a lot more creative at finding parking spots and where they park," the blog stated. "The Administration wanted all students to know that there is going to be some construction going on in some of the parking lots this week! Do not get frustrated if these lots are closed for evening classes. UT Tyler is doing this as a response to the parking concerns at the start of the semester. So be patient while they fix the problem."

The construction projects includes:

  • Lot 6 (by the Cowan and Nursing Building) will be closed starting tonight after 5 pm. Re-striping will begin at 7 p.m.
  • Lot 15 (by HPC, O Hall, Powerplant, and Physical and Health Building) will be closed Wednesday, after 5 p.m. Re-striping will begin at 7 p.m.
  • Lot 9 (by U-Pines and the business building) will be closed Thursday, after 5 p.m.   Re-striping will begin at 7 p.m.

Parking at the university has been an issue since fall semester began in late August. One week ago, the university temporarily lifted its no-parking restriction on certain sections of Varsity Drive, which provides access to UT-Tyler's north entrance. Over the summer, the university introduced angled parking spaces and free shuttle service for students, after restructuring its parking lots reserved for faculty and staff.
