(CNN) - The NFL season kicks off tonight with the New York Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys.

With the league locked in a labor dispute with the referees union, replacement referees will be used to officiate the game. Negotiations between the NFL and the referees over pay and other matters have been on and off for months. The replacement refs come from the college and high school ranks.

Some of their work in pre-season games has come under fire - from penalty calls to communication issues. The 121 NFL referees are considered part-time workers. Last year, they were paid an average of nearly $150-thousand dollars, plus benefits.
