ATHENS/HENDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - In less than two weeks, Henderson County residents from Athens to Chandler will have daily public transportation to jobs, shopping and medical services in Tyler.
An Athens nonprofit church outreach has founded Chariot bus line, a twice daily transit service that begins Monday, Sept. 17. Chariot buses will leave from Heritage Square in downtown Athens at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. each day for Tyler, making stops in Murchison, Brownsboro, Chandler and Tyler Pounds Regional Airport (upon request) on its way to the Tyler central bus transfer.
Dale Hedrick, with the East Texas Council of Governments, told KYTX CBS-19 in late July that the plan was for the bus route to make stops near the Tyler medical district on Beckham Avenue and outside Broadway Square Mall, using Tyler Transit bus stops.
According to the Malakoff News, the process will reverse each day, with the buses taking the same route from Tyler to Athens at 1 p.m. and 5:40 p.m.
Cost per trip is $5, although there are weekly and monthly rates available. Call 877-776-4335 for more details, or call ETCOG's transportation division, at (903) 984-8641.
