NACOGDOCHES/NACOGDOCHES COUNTY (KYTX) - A six-year-old Nacogdoches girl was fortunate to escape with "very minor" injuries after she was bitten in the face by a pitbull dog.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday, a Nacogdoches County sheriff's deputy and City of Nacogdoches animal control officer were dispatched to a local hospital in regards to the bite. According to sheriff's records, the child was helping her uncle place the dog in a pen when she was bitten.

City Animal Control Supervisor Jamie Shelton said the injuries sustained by the child were "very, very minor," including a scratch above her lip and another small puncture on her face.

"The dog could have some major damage, but it was very minor," Shelton said.

The dog will be held for 10 days at the city animal shelter for observation to ensure it is not rabid, Shelton added. The 10-day observation period is standard for every animal reported to the city following a human bite.
