City of Athens asks residents to limit outdoor watering

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS/HENDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - The City of Athens announced Wednesday that it has entered into Stage 1 of its drought contingency plan in hopes of achieving a 10 percent voluntary reduction in daily water use.

City water customers are asked to voluntarily limit irrigation of landscaped areas to even-numbered days for customers with street addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) and odd-numbered days for customers with street addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9).

Customers are also asked to irrigate landscapes only between midnight and 10 a.m., or 8 p.m. to midnight on designated water days.

Water conservation is urged to minimize or discontinue water use for non-essential purposes, according to a city notice.

A copy of the city's complete drought contingency plan is available at Athens City Hall, 508 E. Tyler Street.
