Gulf Coast fish advisory issued

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - A warning about some seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. Health department workers say testing revealed unsafe levels of mercury in swordfish and blue marlin.

The concentration of mercury levels found in blue marlin off the Gulf of Mexico were 18 times the health department's guidelines. In swordfish, mercury levels were 1.6 times the recommended levels.

The health department says your safest bet is eating smaller, younger fish from a variety of waters.

Restaurant managers should be able to tell you where their fish is coming from if you ask them. If you're at the grocery store, make sure your fish has proper labeling and nutrition information listed. Most grocers should already have automated recall systems in place.

An advisory was already in place against eating king mackerel from the gulf- and that's still in effect.

Pregnant women should especially avoid eating fish caught from the Gulf Coast. The health department recommends most men and women limit eating swordfish and marlin to no more than twice per month.
