Web Exclusive: RNC vs. DNC Social media battle

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - At the peak of his acceptance speech, President Obama generated more than 50,000 tweets per minute. So the question is, how did other convention speakers compare?

Two parties, two weeks, millions of posts, pins, blogs and tweets. The Republican convention was active on at least ten social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and more. The Democrats, at least four.

Tweets related to the RNC totaled four million plus over four days in Tampa.

The Democrats topped 5 million on night two.

Among featured speakers, Mitt Romney led his party with a peak of 14,289 tweets per minute as he wrapped up his acceptance.

"Thank you so very much, may god bless you, may god bless the American people, and may god bless the united states of America."

Running mate Paul Ryan topped out around 6,700, hitting high notes with lines like this one:

"I hope it's not a deal breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC and it ends with Zeppelin.

But that didn't come close to the Democratic stars.

Michelle Obama hit more than 22,000 tweets per minute with this line "we've got so much more to do..."

And Bill Clinton did lots of talking too.

"You must vote and you must re-elect president Barack Obama!"

Prompting lots of tweeting, spiking over 22,000 tweets per minute as he concluded his remarks.

The reason for the gap between the parties? A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project may offer some insight. More Democrats place importance on social networking sites than their Republican or Independent counterparts.
