Tracking Texas students at school

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A new method to keep your children safe at school.

One Texas school district is tracking students every move on campus with a micro chip.

Students in Tyler ISD already wear ID badges around their necks so faculty can make sure they're in the right place at the right time.

But at John Jay High School in San Antonio, it goes a step further with microchips in the badges to track a student's every move.

"Anything we can do to help protect the kids is a good thing," says Brenda Terry who has a granddaughter in school in Troup ISD.

"I'm ok with ID badges," says Chris Gomez.

When asked how she felt about micro chips inside the badges she said, "I do not like that at all."

Gomez has a son at Hubbard Middle School and doesn't like the idea that school badges could come with more than a picture.

"What's next? Are they going to micro chip your child and be watching them all the time?" asks Gomez.

This goes one step further than security cameras.

Many high schools and even colleges across the state use lanyard ID's with a photo on them, like this one from TJC.

In this case, the badge has a micro chip inside that can track the students across the school by sensors in the ceiling tiles.

"They have to go to school, so it's a good idea to know they're in good hands," says Terry.

Brenda Terry says she would feel more at ease if her granddaughter had a sensor chip.

"It is vital to have students here in our classrooms everyday. If they are not here, they are not learning," says John Jay High Assistant Principal Gretchen Catron.

Northside ISD says it' keeps kids in class and helps locate them in an emergency.

A job made easier, by one tiny chip.

Students in Tyler ISD high schools are required to wear lanyard ID badges everyday where they are visible.

They're used for security of the staff and students as well as accessing accounts on campus.

But the district has not discussed the use of the sensor chips.
