CHANDLER/HENDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - Brownsboro
Independent School District's Chandler Elementary School received a Blue Ribbon
Award from the U.S. Department of Education as a high-performing school.
Texas
Education Agency announced the award Friday. Only 16 Texas schools received
Blue Ribbon Awards.
Chandler
Elementary School is led by principal Tina Eaton. According to the Texas
Tribune, the 477-student school is rated exemplary, with its students
performing well above the state average in passing state test scores. Teachers
at Chandler Elementary have roughly the same experience as the state average
but are paid less than the state average. The school is 62.5 percent
economically disadvantaged, compared to 59 percent statewide average.
In 2011, 99
percent of Chandler students passed the reading portion – and nearly 97 percent
passed the math portion – of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.
Dr. Chris
Moran serves as superintendent of Brownsboro ISD.
The award-winning schools will be recognized at a Blue Ribbon School
ceremony Nov. 12-13 in Washington, D.C.
"This prestigious award reflects the
excellence BISD strives for each day for every student enrolled in the district,"
Moran told the Tyler Morning Telegraph. "Chandler Elementary School is a
shining example of the fact that every student can succeed, given the right
environment and support."
The Blue
Ribbon Schools Program, in existence since 1982, honors public and private
elementary, middle and high schools on one of two criteria: dramatically
improving student performance to high levels on state tests, and for a school's
students scoring in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests.
The nominated schools were chosen through an objective evaluation of student
achievement statistics and other data for the more than 8,000 public school and
charter campuses in the state. The schools selected have demonstrated success
in closing the achievement gap, and each school has an economically
disadvantaged population of 40 percent or greater.
Schools nominated by the Texas Education Agency for the award serve as
models of best practices for schools across the state.
