Fire in Smith County 90% contained; firefighters say wind to blame

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The Winona Fire Department is at the scene of a big brush fire in Smith County that threatened many homes in the area.

Winona Fire Chief says the fire is 90% contained at this time, and burned around 5-10 acres before firefighters were able to get a hold of it.

The fire was caused by an out-of-control burning that jumped a fence and burnt a field across from the street of the brush fire, which spread easily because of how windy it is outside.

Four homes were in danger from the fire but are safe at this time, although fires are still burning in the woods behind the homes.

Winona firefighters are asking people not to take advantage of the cooler weather to burn, with windy conditions making it easy for fires to spread. There are several fires in East Texas because people are burning while it's windy.

Winona, Jackson Heights, Chapel Hill and the Texas Forest Service all responded to the fire.
