Lawmakers call for change in detergent-pod packaging

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Lawmakers are sounding the alarm about colorfully packaged detergent pods, which kids eat thinking they are candy.

New York senator Charles Schumer is pushing for legislation to change the look of the detergent pods, or to make the container child proof.

He says the medical community is well aware of the risks to children too young to know the difference between candy and the highly concentrated detergents.

"The worst part of it all is that these pods are super concentrated, so it's much worse than a kid just eating a mouthful of detergent. So what we have here is a super-toxic product that easy to get to, looks like candy, a parent's worst nightmare," says Sen. Charles Schumer.

Senator Schumer says the Consumer Product Safety Commission needs to set the safety standard and make it mandatory for all detergents to have child-proof packaging.
