Chicago teachers begin strike today

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO, IL. (CBS) - The school year just started for most Chicago students and as of this morning, it will abruptly end.

About 30-thousand Chicago teacher's will be walking the picket line today -- their first strike in 25 years. Talks with the Union and the school district broke down Sunday night, ending months of tense negotiations.

This will affect nearly 7 hundred schools and about 4 hundred thousand students, including some from neighborhoods struggling with crime and gang problems. The Union itself has about 30,000 members. The district is offering a two-percent pay raise over four years but the union wants 19 percent.
