U.S. ambassador to Libya killed in attack

Posted: Updated:

LIBYA (CBS) - An American State Department officer is dead following an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

A group of armed gunmen stormed the consulate and killed the diplomat during a firefight. The group is reportedly upset about an American film that depicts the Islamic prophet Muhammad in an unflattering light.

The film is also linked to clashes in Egypt where protestors stormed the U.S. embassy in Cairo. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the attacks.
