Health Alert: Asthma patients may not need daily steroids

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - If you suffer from mild asthma and have been using steroid inhalers to prevent attacks, listen up. A new study in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" finds those that take the steroid do no better than those who use their inhalers only when they have symptoms. The finding could lead to less expensive, personalized plans to treat asthma.

(CBS) - Latinos have an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes because they store fat in their pancreas. That's according to researchers at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. The study compared white, black and Latino adults, all overweight with similar pre-diabetic conditions. Latinos tended to store fat in their pancreas which was then less able to produce enough insulin, a metabolism-regulating hormone.

(CBS) - A new progress report is out this morning from the American Association for Cancer Research. In the past year, the Food and Drug Administration has approved 8 new cancer-treatment drugs said to be more effective and less toxic than older drugs. The organization predicts two out of every three cancer deaths in the U.S. this year will come from preventable causes, such as tobacco use, obesity and physical inactivity. It also finds cancer will be the number one killer both in the U.S. and globally soon.
