Tyler city council passes budget, lowers taxes

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- Lower property taxes are on the way as part of the city's 2013 budget.

As approved by the city council Wednesday, the new budget has a slight increase in spending, most of which goes to police and fire fighters.

Meanwhile the city's decision to switch to natural gas (CNG) is paying off as lower prices per gallon slash fuel bills. Now those savings are starting to trickle down.

"We have been able to put a small productivity increase in for our employees," Mayor Barbara Bass said. "I know they've been having to tighten their budget like everyone else."

The city is also passing on the savings to home and business owners with a property tax decrease of one tenth of one percent. That means the tax bill next year on a $100,000 home drops by about $120.
