Animal activists urging residents to attend tonight's Longview council meeting

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Animal welfare supporters are encouraging residents to attend tonight's Longview City Council meeting, in which the city might extend its contract with the Humane Society of Northeast Texas.

The Humane Society has asked for a 23 percent increase in funding from the city, which uses the agency's animal shelter on Enterprise Street to house animals who are unwanted or seized by city animal control officers and residents. The agency has also announced that it will end its open admissions status in 2014, which would effectively end public contracts with the City of Longview.

Local attorney Kelly Heitkamp plans to speak to council members during open forum about information she said was obtained from her state court petition for Humane Society of Northeast Texas financial records between 2008 and 2010. She alleges that as much as $140,000 is unaccounted for in the agency's books.

"We need numbers of animal advocates so we can have a better animal shelter for our city and man's best friend," said Elyse Bowers, member of local nonprofit group All Hearts 4 Paws.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, located at 300 W. Cotton Street. For more information, call (903) 237-1000.
