Baby flamingos born at Caldwell Zoo

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- Caldwell Zoo has eight new feathered friends and a few more on the way. For the first time in four years the zoo's flamingos decided they wanted to mate.

Flamingos are famous for being particular about when they reproduce. Zoo curators think a wetter summer and the end of a nearby construction project convinced the flamingos to give it a go.

After waiting for so long, the zoo had to work extra hard to protect the new eggs.

"They lay one egg out there on top of their mud mound," Bird and Mammal Curator Yvonne Stainback said. "We take the real one and we put a fake one back that we have made out of plaster of Paris in a mold. That's just for security so that nothing will happen to that egg out there."

The zoo makes another switch right before the egg is ready to hatch and the flamingos never catch on.

They're expecting several more babies in the next week and they're all on display for visitors.
