North Texas Sikh members met with law enforcement during community outreach

U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Texas:

GARLAND (KYTX) – In an effort to better understand the challenges facing the Sikh community of North Texas, the United States Attorney's Offices for the Eastern and Northern Districts of Texas, the Collin County District Attorney's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Garland Police Department met with Sikh community members at the Sikh Temple of North Texas on Sep. 12, 2012.

The meeting was organized as an open forum in which the law enforcement representatives addressed questions posed by the audience members.  Among the many issues discussed were safety and travel concerns, employment opportunities for Sikhs in local, state, and federal law enforcement, and special issues raised by some of the tenets of the Sikh faith, including the requirements to carry a Kippan, or small sword, and wearing the Kirah, or iron bracelet.

Law enforcement representatives hoped to establish an open line of communication between members of the Sikh community and the local, state, and federal government so that law enforcement may better serve this vibrant community.

The United States Attorney's Offices routinely conduct community outreach efforts so that law enforcement always maintains open lines of communication.  Members of the interested communities are encouraged to contact the United States Attorney's Office if such an outreach program would be beneficial to any group or organization.
