Chapel Hill student brings dummy grenade on bus

Posted: Updated:

CHAPEL HILL (KYTX) -Smith County Sheriffs responded to a call Wednesday morning that a student brought a dummy grenade on board a Chapel Hill ISD school bus.

After being notified by another student on the bus of the grenade, the bus driver evacuated the bus near one of the elementary schools and contacted authorities.

Officials tell CBS 19 that because of the driver's military background she knew the grenade was a dummy.

"He wasn't trying to hide it, he hadn't threatened anyone," Superintendent Donni Cook said. "He thought it was really cool and wanted to show it to a friend."

The student was placed in alternative learning program for three weeks. The punishment is within the guidelines of Chapter 37 of Texas Education Code.

"He was devastated," Cook said of the student's reaction to the punishment.

Cook goes on to say the student never had been in trouble and will not get the maximum amount of time because he did not have any bad intentions by bringing the device to school and it posed no danger to himself or others.

Cook said the district is using the incident as a teaching opportunity for improving safety.
