Union Grove teacher accused of sexual assault resigns from district amid investigation

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - A Union Grove ISD teacher and coach accused of sexual assault resigns amid an investigation.

CBS 19 spoke to Steven Mulkey's attorney "Scrappy" Holmes today. He confirms that Mulkey has resigned from the district effective December 31st.

Mulkey was hired earlier this year to coach and teach history for the fall semester.

As we reported in late July, Mulkey was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the school district.

Students accused him of sexual assault 30 years ago.

Holmes has released a statement to CBS 19 about the resignation, saying: "Mulkey gave up fighting a hopeless battle against a bunch of slander. These lies have destroyed his career and his life."

The News Journal reports the district does not intend to hire anyone to fill Mulkey's position until the spring.
