Van Zandt County grand jury returns murder indictment

Posted: Updated:
VAN ZANDT COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Van Zandt County Grand Jury indicted a suspect in a 2009 lover's quarrel which turned deadly last week.

According to a list of indictments received from the Van Zandt County District Attorney's office, Wilhelm Edgar Ostrom was indicted on charges of aggravated assault of a family member and murder Thursday.

Ostrom is accused of stabbing Jonathan Shipman to death in October 2009 after a dispute broke out over a woman he and another man were dating at the same time.

Officials with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office told the Tyler Morning Telegraph in 2009 that Shipman and a woman went to 1640 County Road 4605 to retrieve the woman's property from what appeared to be her home. The woman apparently had lived there with Ostrom and had a key to the residence but was moving in with Shipman.

When they arrived at the home, a fight broke out and Shipman was stabbed multiple times. The woman was also cut, authorities said.

The woman, Shipman, and another man who was at the residence, fled towards Tyler, but the car wrecked, and deputies were dispatched to the accident on County Road 4907.

Shipman died as a result of the wounds.

Shipman and Ostrom were both apparently married at the time of the altercation, authorities said.
