(CBS) - Mitt Romney is defending a statement he made in a secretly recorded video where he called nearly half of all Americans "victims."

The video was released to "Mother Jones Magazine" which posted it online. In it, Romney says there are 47-percent of Americans who are dependent upon the government and will vote for President Obama no matter what.

Romney called a press conference Monday night to explain that the statement was in response to a question about how he could win and he was talking about the political process.

He also said his view wasn't "elegantly stated."
