433 Tyler drivers ticketed for speeding in school zones

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  An unusually large number of Tyler drivers are getting tickets for speeding through school zones, putting children in danger.

Tyler police have written 433 speeding tickets in school zones since school began in August.

Ashpin Gore is at the Tyler Municipal Court with a crumpled speeding ticket in her hand.

"I was kind of speeding up trying to get up the hill. I wasn't paying attention to the flashing lights and soon as I got down I was trying to slow down and the cop just came up behind me," said Ashpin Gore.

Ashpin was going 13 miles over the 25 mile per hour posted speed limit in a school zone near her new job.

"I just wasn't thinking about it," said Gore.

She's obviously not the only person who wasn't thinking about it.

More than 400 people have been ticketed for speeding in Tyler school zones since school began on August 27th.

"When you come around a corner, they're right there waiting for you," said Gini Rainey.

Gini Rainey works near a Tyler school on South Vine Avenue. Everyday, she sees officers with their radar guns pointed out the window.

"Several times people been pulled over, especially early in the morning when kids are on their way to school," said Rainey.

Our cameras were rolling for the less than 10 minutes before this driver was pulled over for speeding in a school zone.

"They're very vigilant about watching for people that are speeding up and down the street and pulling them over and giving them tickets," said Rainey.

So, if you want to avoid a ticket that can range in price from $250 to $325...

"Slow down in those school zones," said Gore.

As a reminder, it's also illegal to text and drive in a school zone.  Last year, more than 3,000 drivers got tickets for speeding in school zones in Tyler.
