TYLER (KYTX) - A jagged piece of papyrus dated back to the second century is causing debate across the world and in east Texas. It refers to Jesus's wife, raising questions about whether Jesus was married.
"What's missing is context, what was the papyrus part of, what particular writing did it come from"
That's the question green acre's Baptist church associate pastor ken woolen says needs to be answered before considering the so called "evidence" as proof Jesus had a wife.
"It's like finding a note laying in the street, what credence can you give to it until you know where it came from who it was speaking to and what document it was part of originally"
Harvard Divinity School professor Karen King was given the fragment by an anonymous collector and she been studying the small writing sample that says quote "
"Jesus says to his disciples My Wife, and in the next sentence he says she is able to be my disciple"
"The papyrus itself is described to be no bigger than a business card, and many say that the scholars can say whatever they want but the church will stand by it's doctrine."
"I just believe that if he would've been married The Bible would tell us, and it doesn't tell us so, he wasn't married."
That's all the proof that some East Texans say they need, while others say they would never budge from what they've been taught through their faith .
"I've been a Catholic all my life and I don't believe in it."
Because this question of Jesus being married has always been unanswered, some say a simple scrap piece of unknown paper is not enough to get them to believe the hype.
"I don't know who's trying to bring something new out to try to make people upset but absolutely it's bogus!"
