Man awarded $7M In "Popcorn Lung" Verdict

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - A Colorado man has won a $7 million verdict in the so-called microwave popcorn lung case.

It all started about 6 years ago when Wayne Watson started having trouble breathing. He was diagnosed with a disease called "bronchiolitis obliterans" which makes getting air, tough. Doctors concluded it was caused by the fumes that were released when he microwaved his popcorn. Watson sued the company saying it failed to warn him of the risks. After a two and a half week trial, a jury awarded him $7 million dollars.

"It's just the truth. And that's why we won this case. Because the truth was on our side," says Watson.

Watson says he's lost roughly 50 percent of his lung capacity. He ate about two bags of popcorn per day.
