TYLER (KYTX) - What are you supposed to do when you're in a hit and run?
For one Tyler couple, it took a wild turn when a suspect lead them and a car salesman on a 20 minute chase.
"This (truck) is a pretty good deal. It's 2010," said Jo Ann Ferguson
Jo Ann Ferguson and her husband Jimmy have been looking for a new truck at Jack O'Diamonds in Tyler.
"He's been wanting a Honda Ridgeline and I finally got him the right price and found the right truck he wanted," said Paul Wade.
But, the Fergusons wanted to test drive the truck before they bought it. So, they jumped into the truck along with Paul and headed down Highway 155.
"My husband was driving. We got down in one of the back roads and my husband said you need to drive it too," said Jo Ann.
Jo Ann got behind the wheel and took off.
"We're driving along and feeling the gas pedal and just trying to get up a little bit of speed," said Ferguson.
Jo Ann said she was driving about 50 miles an hour.
"In a minute...WHAM!" exclaimed Jo Ann.
"All of sudden I heard some tires screeching. He ran into us doing 70mph," said Wade.
A man driving a small silver car suddenly hit them from behind. The Fergusons said the man got out of his car and appeared to be disoriented.
"The guy got back in his car and in a minute he put it in gear and pulled out," said Jo Ann.
"I told them go ahead and get in so we can catch him. He's going to get away if we don't," said Wade.
Paul called 911 while Jo Ann chased the man for a nearly half an hour through Smith County.
"He went off a couple of roads and we followed him. He was going in and out of lanes and he stopped a couple of times," said Wade.
"We kept following him and got back on 155. He turned on the Loop and started down the Loop and the sheriff's department got behind us and said yeah that's him," said JoAnn.
As for the truck they planned on buying, they're sold on it and they hope to get a good deal.
"hey, that would be a bonus," said Jo Ann.
Police say it's tempting to chase the other driver if you can. But, it's dangerous to do so.
You can't be sure what the other driver may be thinking or what the driver will do once you've been spotted. So, after being struck by a hit and run driver, it's best to remain in control, record what you can remember, and call police.
