Team Coverage: Charleston Park Neighborhood concerned about recent apartment shootings

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - People who live in a neighborhood right next to the Cambridge apartments are concerned about the shootings.

Charleston Park is a quiet neighborhood in Tyler with tree lined streets and manicured lawns.

A place some people have always wanted to call home.

"Everybody is very friendly and everybody waves to each other when you walk and you're driving by," said Jeremy Gray.

Jeremy Gray moved into Charleston Park three months ago.

As he was moving in, neighbors filled him in on the people in the apartment complex next door.

"They were trying to warn us it use to be loud and a little bit crazy," said Gray.

Just a few houses down from Jeremy Gray, we spoke to Judson Welch. He's lived in the neighborhood for about five years with his wife and three children.

"Over the last year and a half we have seen a dramatic increase in criminal activity," said Welch.

People in Charleston Park said they can hear noises and loud music coming from the Cambridge apartments.

"You hear an occasional fight or yelling, but it's stuff you can kind of shrug aside," said Jeremy Smith.

"On more than one occasion there's been some random people wondering around in the alleyway and they duck into the wooded area. I can only assume they were going back to the apartment complex," said Welch.

Welch said some neighbors have had their houses broken in to, but no one can say for sure who did it.

With the recent shootings, people in this neighborhood are only becoming more concerned.

"I pray over my home and all of this area. So, I feel confident in our safety. But, it is a little bit alarming to hear that," said Gray.

"I think the management group could do something about it by being choosier about the tenants they choose or how they go about choosing their occupants," said Welch.

The Tyler police department tells CBS19 they're continuing to step up patrols in that area and want to hear from anyone who's worried about something they see around the complex.
