More Americans dying from suicide than car crashes

TYLER (KYTX) - Suicide now claims more lives than car accidents. That's according to a new study from the American Journal of Public Health, which says that fact goes for Americans of all ages.

37,000 Americans took their lives in 2009 alone. That may shock many, but local counselors say they're not surprised.

Licensed Counselor and Social Worker with ETMC Behavioral Center Janice Terry says, "I think we see more and more depression, more and more anxiety, more and more people not having a way out other than suicide."

"The rate of suicide had tripled in the last 15 years," says UT Tyler Licensed Professional Counselor Linda Long, who says more people are asking for her help now more than ever.

"We've seen more people come and take advantage of our counseling services, just this semester we've seen quite an increase in that," she says.

The study can't prove, but does suggest, that the poor economy may have an effect on the increase.  Long says she agrees.

"I do think the economy has something to do with the rise. We do see college students struggling financially. In my opinion though, I think social media has something to do with the way people feel alienated. There's a sense of global community that the Internet brings about but there's also a sense of loneliness," Long says.

People these days also tend to use social media as a public diary, posting their feelings of sadness or depression on Facebook or Twitter. That's where lots of therapists say you should be looking if you suspect someone needs help.

"It's really important to reach out in person and say what's going on. And don't be afraid to actually ask that question - are you thinking about harming yourself?"

Asking the tough questions could save someone's life.

If you know someone has attempted suicide, or is planning to, experts say don't waste time, call 9-1-1. You should also let their loved ones know so they can get professional help.
