West Tyler development grows

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - South Tyler isn't the only area of the city where business is booming. West Tyler is also seeing positive growth. A new Texas Attorney General's Office and fire station opened in the past year, but that's just a taste of what's to come. CBS 19's Amanda Roberson has more on what's happening on the west side of Tyler.

From retail stores to car washes to restaurants, west Tyler development is anything but slow. The next new business to open in the area, a Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen restaurant. It's expected to open early November but the city said it's all part of the Tyler 21, 30 year plan to boost business in the area.

It's nothing new to see hundreds of cars driving around Tyler's west loop, but seeing more businesses is.

"There's been a lot more restaurants, a lot more, and Walmart and all that stuff really helps so we don't have to drive to south Tyler for everything," explained Sue Parrish.

For people like Parrish who has lived in her west Tyler home 30 years, more variety and less driving is welcome change - like new restaurants and a renovated grocery store that opened within the past few weeks. "Sometimes a neighborhood doesn't want all the extra traffic but really we need the businesses."

"There was so much room for growth out here, so much area for opportunity."  Opportunity East Texas Area Manager for Wing Stop Jason Jackson said prompted the chain to open a store here five years ago. "This store has done very very well.  Actually, out of our seven stores it is our top performer."

Businesses opening and succeeding is exactly what District Two Councilman Ralph Caraway said is one goal of the Tyler 21 plan, including development in west and northwest Tyler. "We've been able to develop living facilities that lead into the loop, so the disproportion we've seen in the past, growth is taking place."

The thirty year Tyler 21 plan is five years in and Parrish is happy to see fruition. "It's great to have long range plans but you just keep waiting waiting waiting and finally things are starting to come up."

Two other parts of the development plan were building a water infrastructure in North Tyler between Highway 69 and I-20. That's in place and ready for more businesses and homes to move in.  Also, Earl Campbell Parkway opened last month. It's expected to be a gateway for more restaurants, businesses, and hotels.

The first major business to move in along Earl Campbell Parkway is medical insurance group Centene. That will bring more than 300 jobs to the area and likely more restaurants to serve those new workers.
