Tyler, Texas (KYTX) -- They're small in size with big ramifications if they wind up in the wrong hands. That's why there's an effort Saturday to get rid of your unwanted or expired medications.
Past cleanout drives in large cities show a need for concern. "The last take-back program confiscated more than 200 tons," Toby Cooper, clinical manager of Trinity Mother Frances pharmacy, said. He explains the dangers that accompany keeping those capsules past their expiration.
For example, taking blood thinner medication, "actually could put the patient at higher risk for harm than for being treated," Cooper said.
That's because ingredients degrade over time. There's also the obvious risk that your prescription could end up in the wrong hands. "We know that unintentional poisonings or overdose is one of the leading causes of death and injury specifically to adolescents and children," Cooper said.
Tyler police and the DEA are teaming up Saturday to keep that from happening. "They'll be disposed of by the DEA in a proper fashion, " Officer Don Martin, spokesperson for the Tyler Police Department, said.
The Medication Cleanout is Saturday, Sept. 29th at FRESH grocery store in Tyler from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
They'll accept medications and vitamins, but no medical equipment.
