Hopkins County reports first West Nile death

HOPKINS COUNTY (KYTX) -- State and county health officials reported Hopkins County's first death from the West Nile Virus Friday.

That news comes as the number of people infected continues to rise across the state and East Texas.

Statewide there are 1,442 confirmed human cases of West Nile and 68 deaths. In East Texas there are 100 human cases and six deaths--one in each Cass, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Hopkins, and Panola counties.
