TYLER (KYTX) - Strong winds knock a tree into power lines. The broken pole falls and totals a Tyler man's car, and causes the neighborhood near Copeland and Hudson to lose power.
Blake Yowell's rainy Sunday afternoon inside was interrupted, as the huge tree across the street toppled down in his neighbor's yard.
"I was sitting there watching football, me and my roommate and we just heard a loud crash, power went out, we jump up take off running," Yowell says.
They ran outside to find a whole lot of damage.
"I guess it just uprooted itself and it literally missed his house by like this much!" Yowell says. "Just took out the telephone pole and smashed his car there. It's awful."
The homeowner checked out his totaled Mustang, as crews rushed to fix the power lines, lines laying in coils in the street.
Oncor experts say several power outages just like this can affect hundreds if not thousands of customers.
This is not the first time Yowell's seen a power line down right near his house
"One fell right behind our house probably 7 months ago," he said.
He says it concerns him how easily the poles can come crashing down in strong storms.
"It's just scary you know? Because it could crush somebody's house and kill them."
He says it could hurt him or someone he knows.
"I don't want to get electrocuted! It's a little creepy."
Crews started working to fix the downed lines, but for Yowell there was one more thing to worry about: "I need to find somewhere to watch football!"
