Local supporters rally behind candidates in Presidential Debate

Smith County (KYTX) -- It's the first showdown between Mitt Romney and incumbent President Obama.

"Romney is a very good debater, and Obama really isn't," Ashton Oravetz, Smith County Republican Party Chair, said.

David Henderson, Smith County Democratic Party Chair, disagrees. "The experience he has gives him an edge," Henderson said.

Both sides hope their opponent's weakness will be exposed. Democrats argue for Romney that would be offensive comments.

"Every time he opens his mouth he says something like 'Disparaging 47 percent' or 'I love to fire people'," Henderson said.

Republicans believe Obama may have claims he needs to defend.

"He's running with a lot of figures that are not true, and I think Romney will say 'look these are the figures here what you're saying is not right'," Oravetz said.

Both agree it's a tight race.

"I think what will determine this election is who turns out," Oravetz said.

Henderson agrees the first debate is crucial. "By the time the third one rolls around, millions of people will have voted," Henderson said.
