Health Alert: Free birth control may lower number of abortions

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study shows free birth control can lower the number of unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine gave 9-thousand women free birth control for four years. During that time abortion rates for the group were up to 78 percent lower than the national average. Researchers say about 50 percent of all U.S. pregnancies are unplanned.

(CBS) - Teens who smoke are more likely to die of heart disease later in life - even if they eventually quit. A new study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology followed 28-thousand college aged men for 30 years. They found those who smoked and then quit in middle age still had a 29 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease. The odds were even worse for men who never quit - their risk of dying from heart disease doubled.

(CBS) - A study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds a wrinkle fighter can calm an overactive bladder. Researchers followed more than 250 women with urinary incontinence for six months. They found a one time Botox injection in the bladder reduced the urge to go the bathroom just as well as daily prescription pills. And for many women, their incontinence completely went away. Doctors say Botox shots relax the bladder muscle.
