UPDATE: Texas Spine & Joint released a statement:

TYLER, Texas ( October 5, 2012) (KYTX) – Officials at Texas Spine & Joint Hospital reported that none of its patients received injections of the contaminated pain medication that has been linked to an outbreak of Meningitis in several states.

Thousands of vials of a contaminated steroid, methylprednisolone acetate, were shipped to 23 states. The product in question, which is commonly used for neck and back pain, came from a compounding pharmacy that is not under the direct regulation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).@

"We do not use any products at Texas Spine & Joint Hospital unless they have been produced under the strict regulations of the FDA," says Brad Kay, Pharmacy Director of Texas Spine & Joint Hospital. "We do not purchase or use any medications from the New England Compounding Center, the company that manufactured the contaminated steroid."

New England Compounding Center, Inc (NECC), based in Framingham, Massachusetts, has issued a voluntarily recall of the medication. The steroid contaminated with Meningitis has been linked to the death of at least five people in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control on Thursday.

"We know that patients and the community are concerned," says Kay. "Texas Spine & Joint Hospital places the utmost priority on patient safety and we encourage you to contact our hospital if you have any questions."

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital is a privately owned hospital specializing in orthopedic and spine surgery, procedures, and tests and was just recently awarded Top 1% in the nation for patient safety and #7 in the nation for spinal fusion surgery according to CareChex.

Azalea Orthopedics released a statement:

TYLER (KYTX) - There have been several cases of meningitis associated with epidural steroid injections. This DOES NOT AFFECT the patients of Azalea Orthopedics.

Thus far, they have narrowed the focus to compounded steroids manufactured by the New England Compounding Center, a pharmacy that is not under the direct regulation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

We do not use any products unless they have been produced under the strict regulations of the FDA.  We have confirmed with Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, Trinity Mother Francis Health System, and East Texas Medical Center that their hospitals do not use Compound Steroids for epidural steroid injections.

Thus, none of our patients are affected by this national alert.
