Health Alert: Children with autism wonder away

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The part of your brain that works on remembering when you're awake is hard at work even when you are asleep. Researchers at UCLA say it helps explain how you can more easily recall phone numbers or directions you've memorized the day before. Researchers also found that part of the brain is also very active under anesthesia.

(CBS) - A new study finds "patient navigators" can make a critical difference for women with breast cancer. Hundreds of hospitals and cancer facilities now employ navigators to help patients with everything from appointments to insurance. Researchers focused on 26-hundred women in Washington, D.C. Those who used navigators to help them through the medical system received their diagnoses nearly twice as fast.

(CBS) - Nearly half of children with autism wander away from the safety of people they know. Researchers from the interactive autism network sampled more than 12-hundred children with autism spectrum disorders and found they are four times more likely to go missing than their unaffected siblings. Most children are missing for an average of 41 minutes.
