JACKSONVILLE (KYTX) - An elderly woman standing on the side of the road near downtown Jacksonville is hit by a car Sunday, according to the Jacksonville Police Department.

Jacksonville Police Department detectives tell CBS 19 80-year-old Margie Benge was standing on the side of South Jackson Road at a pro-life demonstration. At about 2:30 p.m., 19-year-old Matthew McCauley from Bullard hit Benge with his car. Detectives say he had fallen asleep at the wheel. His car finally came to a stop when he struck a boat.

Benge was taken to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, where she is now in critical condition.

McCauley has not been ticketed but his blood has been sent to the DPS crime lab. Results will be back in 2 to 3 weeks.
