Texas bullfighter trampled and still recovering in Tyler hospital

Posted: Updated:

LUFKIN (KYTX) - A Texas man is in a Tyler hospital after being trampled by a bull Saturday at a bull riding event in Lufkin.

CBS 19 got an exclusive interview with Cody Hollums' bullfighter's teammate, Brandon Loden, who told us Cody is still in a medically induced coma at ETMC in Tyler.

Cody and Brandon are bull fighters. Their job is to distract the bull to protect a rider if he falls. This weekend, 27-year-old Cody Hollums was doing just that, when things went terribly wrong.

"We're basically there to put ourselves in harm's way to keep the bull rider from getting ran over," Loden says.

Saturday, it was Brandon Loden's friend who got hit by a bull.

"It was just a normal situation in what we do," he says. "The bull just threw the guy off and Cody stepped in there and grabbed a hold of the bull and the bull hit him and he lost his feet and he wound up underneath him."

The bull trampled Cody's head, leaving him unconscious. Loden says he was rushed to ETMC in Tyler and put into a medically induced coma.

"He's doing better," Loden says. "It's just a slow process. It's just going to take time for him to come out of it."

Cody has love and support coming from all directions.

"It's amazing how much prayer and thought has been out there for Cody," Loden said.

Loden knows his job is very dangerous, but he says bullfighters go into every rodeo knowing the risk.

"It makes you kind of step back and realize about it, but this is in your blood. It's just like anybody playing any other sport, or anything else. It's just a love for what you do, and when you do it, you know that there's risk involved in it. You know that at any time, something terrible could happen."

He says he intends to keep doing what he loves.

"I'm not going to slow down. Cody wouldn't want it."

He's keeping his head up, trying to stay positive for his friend.

"Cody is one of the most likable people you'll ever meet in your life. Very talented, very respectful young man and everybody just loves him to death. He's a tough kid and he's going to be alright," Loden says.

Loden spent the day with Cody's entire family by his side. Cody is still in the ICU at ETMC in Tyler.

Cody is a professional bullfighter with the Championship Bull Riding Circuit. A bull has injured him before. He has four plates in his face from that hit, but he has never been injured this seriously.
