Stink bug population on the rise across U.S.

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - There's a comeback underway in the insect world, and it sure does stink.

Scientists say stink bugs have been reported in 38 states. That's five more states than last year.
The worst infestation is in the Mid-Atlantic region. Scientists say the rise is due to long periods of sustained hot weather over the summer.

Stink bugs give off a pungent smell when they're frightened or crushed. They like to enter homes as the weather cools in the fall.
