NHTSA issues warning about fake auto airbags

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - If you replaced your car's airbag in the past three years, take note: the new airbag could be an unsafe fake.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning this week that counterfeit airbags pose a danger to drivers. They used a demonstration video to show what can happen when a fake airbag is deployed in a crash. NHTSA says the phony airbags could fail to deploy or even injure people in a crash. One of the fake bags exploded with metal shrapnel during testing.

Last month, authorities tested ten fake airbags seized as part of a criminal investigation -- all ten failed. So far, there are no known injuries or deaths resulting from the counterfeits. The NHTSA says only a very small number of vehicles may have fakes.
