East Texas Food Bank will announce expansion of weekend food program

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - More children in Tyler ISD will be provided food over the weekend through a local nonprofit program.

The East Texas Food Bank is scheduled to announce today that it will expand its BackPack Program to all 18 TISD elementary schools this year and serve more than 1,300 children, according to a school district news release.
Last school year, the food bank distributed backpacks to about 1,000 Tyler children.

The program expansion is part of the food bank's five-year plan to reach hungry children in TISD, according to the news release.

The program provides backpacks filled with nutritious and ready-to-eat food for children to eat over the weekend, according to the food bank's website.

Children return empty backpacks at the start of the week and receive the filled backpacks for the next weekend.

The total projected cost of the five-year expansion is about $1 million, according to the news release.

Mentoring Minds, a Tyler-based business, has made an initial gift of $150,000 to this program and is announcing an additional $150,000 pledge to help the East Texas Food Bank reach its goal.

Any donations made by the community for TISD's BackPack Program will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Mentoring Minds up to $150,000.
