Man arrested for grabbing, fondling woman at Rose Rudman Trail

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A 19-year-old from Whitehouse is in jail, accused of groping a woman walking at Rose Rudman. The incident happened Thursday afternoon, right before 2:00.

The 28-year-old victim was walking the trails at Rose Rudman with her child, when she saw a suspicious man, watching her.

She told police she saw a young man acting suspicious. Police say that may was 19-year-old Jacob Bobbitt.

Tyler Police Officer Don Martin says, "She decided because there wasn't anyone else around, she would go to a more populated part of the park."

She turned her stroller around and began walking the other way. She tells police that's when Bobbitt came up behind her and started fondling her.

"When he did that, she immediately let out a scream and was screaming for help. She didn't know what his intent was," Officer Martin said.

People in a car passing by on donnybrook heard her scream.

"They stopped to see what was going on, and to see if they could help. They observed him running, he got into a vehicle, they got the description of the vehicle, police were called immediately," Martin says.

Police found Bobbitt in his car on Rhones Quarter and arrested him for public lewdness.

Officer Martin says it's this is Bobbit's second public lewdness charge in the last few months.

"We've arrested him for something similar in September at a Walmart on South Broadway."

He says the victim in this case did everything right, and says other park-goers should take note.

"They need to be aware of their surroundings. She did a great job of recognizing that something wasn't right there."

Police say if you are walking by yourself, no matter what time of day, make sure you're in an open area where cars or other walkers or runners can see you. That way, you're safe from becoming a victim.

Bobbitt has also been arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, and burglary of a vehicle.

In light of Thursday's situation at the park, there will be a free self defense class this weekend at Lonestar MMA gym in Tyler, on both Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
