Firefighter challenge in Tyler brings a boost to the economy

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- A spirited event in Tyler, drawing more than a 100 incredibly fit competitors and their families to town.

Cheri Ardoin travels all over the nation going to firefighter combat challenges, so the 4.5 hour drive for her, was a piece of cake.

"Tyler is a really good event. There's usually a lot of competitors at this one," Ardoin, a participant, said.

150 to be exact, and these visitors need places to stay, eat, and shop. Ardoin is just one tourist contributing to the economic impact.

"When we're talking about economic impact from tourists we're not talking 1 dollar equals 1 dollar. We're talking about 1 dollar equals about 3 dollars worth of revenue for the city because those are dollars that were earned elsewhere and then brought into Tyler," Kim Morris, with the Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau, said.

Morris said the boost has increased steadily over the years. In 2010, the event brought in $110,000 into the community, and last year it was $150,000.
