Business News: Apple set to unveil iPad Mini

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Apple will reportedly take the wraps off a smaller, cheaper iPad at an event on October 23rd. The screen is expected to be about half the size of the iPad's which measures 9 point 7 inches diagonally. Analysts speculate the smaller iPad will be priced at about 3-hundred dollars. Amazon's Kindle Fire is half the size of the iPad and starts at about $200 dollars. Google and Barnes and Noble also sell tablets in the same size and price range.

(CBS) - Stocks are coming off their worst week since June. Mixed earnings news offset a jump in consumer confidence to a five year high. We'll find out if that confidence has translated into more consumer spending when the government releases the retail sales report for September. We'll also see if the recovery in the housing market is taking hold with new figures this week on home sales and construction.

(CBS) - Social Security recipients will get a cost of living increase of one-to-two-percent next year -- that's the smallest increase in 37 years. Every month, some 56-million people receive Social Security benefits. Cost-of-living adjustments are based on the federal government's measure of inflation. It says consumer prices have risen less than two percent this year.
