With the help of the East Texas community, the Miracle League of East Texas hopes to turn a field of brush into a baseball field with multi-purposes for children with special needs. Your traditional baseball field has dirt, grass, and raised bases, but those conditions can make playing difficult for children with certain disabilities. "There's already a lot of places for kids without disabilities to play so we need to focus in on the ones with disabilities." Andrea McIntyre has a little cousin who suffers from down syndrome who she says is just as active as any other child. She thinks the new addition to Lear park would be just what the park needs. "It could be used for any kind of sports they want to play." The special field would be made of safe, cushy turf to prevent injuries. Everything would be level to make it easy for wheelchairs to get around. "It's good for East Texas it shows we care, shows we love our children and if there's anything we can do we'll do it." Board President for the Miracle League of East Texas Bob Graham says the land was donated by the City of Longview. But the Miracle League has to raise money to break ground, it's a 750 thousand dollar project. "We can just help by donating money and making it happen. The Miracle League say they envision limitless opportunities, a place for children with special needs to participate in soccer, frisbee, special Olympics, but most importantly a place for children with or without disabilities to interact with one another. We're just late to the game, we need to get in here and build this field. Graham says thousands of kids would be able to play on this field each year. "Were not going to let a little bit of money stand in the way of the children having a good time." "I think it's a fantastic idea, I think it's what Longview needs." The Miracle League of East Texas has already started to accept donations and bob graham says after they complete this project in Longview, they hope to get one started in Tyler.
