Jacksonville police investigate body found near local business

Posted: Updated:

JACKSONVILLE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Jacksonville Police continue to investigate the death of a man whose body was found near a local business.

The body of David Smith, 51, was found about 3:30 p.m. Saturday by a tree at a salon in the 800 block of South Bolton Street.
Detective James Oden said two men were walking back home from Walmart when they noticed Smith laying there and realized he was deceased. Authorities do not know how long Smith was deceased before his body was discovered.

"He was cutting down a tree for the salon business owner, and part of the tree had fallen. He had contacted him, and (Smith) was there to finish cutting up what was already on the ground so (the owner) could do something with it," Oden said.

He said Smith, a licensed tree trimmer, sustained some type of head injury. However, police are uncertain how the injury came about and are waiting for autopsy results to confirm the cause of death.

Oden said it appears to be a workplace injury.
