Web Exclusive: Snap Fitness offers truckers place to pump iron

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/WFAA) - Truckers may always be on the move, but they typically move very little. A new business aims to change that helping them pump a little iron.

There are three-and-half million of them.  Industry-wide, truck drivers are among the most unhealthy because so much of their time is spent sitting and eating.
Timothy Owens says it happens fast.  "I gained like 12 pounds in like a month." says trucker, Timothy Owens.
"So the mind is always going, but your body's not.  And we've got to change that a little bit," Rick Limitone, Personal Trainer.  That's why Snap Fitness is opening gyms at truck stops nationwide.

This one at the Flying J on I-20 in Dallas is the first.  "Most of the guys who drive today, they go from the steering wheel to the sleeper. And that's no exercise," says trucker, Herbert Mingo.
Herbert Mingo says that's how he packed on the pounds.  Now, he's afraid he'll lose his trucking license, if he doesn't lose weight.

Before this, Mike Murphy says there was no way to work out on the road. "About your only choice was to keep some kind of equipment in the truck and walk laps around the parking lot," says trucker Mike Murphy.  Now, for about $20-bucks a month, he can stop and sweat.

He hopes, with truck stop gyms from the west to east coast, professional drivers will be healthier, so they can keep rolling strong.
