Health Alert: Cholesterol levels improving among adults

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Cholesterol levels are improving among American adults. Researchers found that cholesterol levels have dropped between 1988 and 2010. They say more people are taking lipid lowering medications. Many people are also making healthy lifestyle changes and reducing the amount of trans fatty acids in their diets. The new study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

(CBS) - A new study on alcohol dependence finds that habitual drinking does more to shorten life than smoking does - especially among women. Researchers in Germany say death rates among alcohol dependent women are nearly 5 times higher than the general population. The average age of death for women in the study was 60 years old.

(CBS) - Tobacco researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital say many smokers have failed to quit because they, and their doctors have not used existing treatments in the most effective way. A new study says only one third of smokers who try to quit use behavioral support or medication - both of which have been proven to be effective. The study also says that combining two nicotine replacement products such as patches, gums, and lozenges is safe, and more effective than trying just one.
