Palestine man allegedly shoots 2 people attempting to repossess truck

Posted: Updated:

ANDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) -- A truck repossession left two people in the hospital and the truck's owner in jail Monday night. Deputies arrested 61-year-old Doyle Cook, Jr. on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting the people trying to repossess his truck.

The attempted repossession happened at about 10 p.m. at Cook's house on County Road 109 near Elkhart. Chief Deputy Troy Black with the Anderson County Sheriff's Department said two repossessors tried to take his truck, but Cook didn't like it, pulled out his revolver and started shooting at them.

The wrecker continued to tow Cook's red pickup when Cook allegedly jumped in his other truck and sped after it.

Vic Crawford of Tyler's Investor Recovery Service was driving and Jennifer Miller was in the passenger seat. The chase got out of control as the three trucks swerved back and forth down the narrow road.

"The driver of course was driving a lot faster than he normally would and sideswiped a tree with the front of that vehicle," Black said.

Black said Crawford and Miller kept going, trying to get away with the truck. They hit County Road 103 and then went north toward Elkhart. Finally Cook got in front of the wrecker and when he got to the intersection at FM 319 he swerved and blocked the road. Black said Cook got out, got his semi-automatic rifle out and started shooting.

"We have a dangerous job but I'm not sure I'd want theirs," Black said.

Crawford took a bullet to the head and Miller was hit too. But they kept driving--releasing Cook's truck from the wrecker as they went--and finally stopped in Elkhart to wait for an ambulance. Black said Cook stopped to check on his truck and that's where deputies arrested him.

"I hope he's vindicated," a neighbor of Cook's who asked not to be identified said. "I hope he's set free. If you go on someone's property, you're trespassing. And he's got signs right there on that tree."

"It's not worth two people getting shot and ending up in the hospital and its not worth another person being in jail," Black said.

All three of the trucks that were involved in that chase were impounded.

Cook's combined bond is set at $250,000.

Miller was in good condition Wednesday night at ETMC in Tyler. Crawford's condition was unavailable.

The repossession company had no comment on what happened.
